What Is Online Therapy for Young Adults?

Therapy is a structured conversation with a licensed mental health professional that helps you understand what you're feeling, why you're struggling, and what to do about it. It's not just talking about your problems. Good therapy teaches practical skills you can use every day.

What Therapy Can Help You With

Manage anxiety and worry
Techniques for when your mind won't stop racing about work, money, relationships, or the future.
Work through depression or feeling stuck
When you've lost motivation, feel disconnected, or can't figure out why you're not where you thought you'd be.
Navigate relationships
Romantic partners, friendships, family dynamics, setting boundaries, and figuring out what you actually want from the people in your life.
Handle career and life transitions
New jobs, career pivots, moves, breakups, financial pressure, and the weight of figuring out your path.
Build confidence and identity
Letting go of who you think you "should" be and building a version of yourself that actually feels right.
Develop real coping skills
Tools you practice in sessions and use in your daily life, not just advice you forget by tomorrow.

Evidence-based, not one-size-fits-all

Our therapists primarily use CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) but always tailor the approach to what you're working through. Sessions are structured, goal-oriented, and focused on building skills that stick.

Designed for your life stage

Your therapist understands the specific pressures of your twenties: career uncertainty, relationship complexity, financial stress, and the gap between where you are and where you thought you'd be. This isn't generic adult therapy.

100% virtual, fits your schedule

Sessions happen over secure video from your apartment, office, car, or any private space. Evening and flexible scheduling available. No commute, no waiting room.

What Our Therapists Help Young Adults With

Anxiety
The most common reason young adults come to Handspring. We treat generalized anxiety, social anxiety, performance anxiety, health anxiety, and panic using evidence-based approaches including CBT.
Depression and Feeling Stuck
Persistent sadness, low motivation, withdrawal, or feeling like you're falling behind. CBT and behavioral activation help you rebuild momentum, reconnect with what matters, and move forward.
Career Stress and Burnout
Overwhelmed by work, unsure about your career path, dealing with a toxic workplace, or burning out. Therapy helps you manage stress, set boundaries, and make decisions without the spiral.
Relationship Challenges
Romantic relationships, friendships, family dynamics, dating, breakups, and learning how to set boundaries. Therapy helps you understand your patterns, communicate effectively, and build healthier connections.
Life Transitions
Moving cities, ending a relationship, starting over, losing someone, or just feeling like everything is changing at once. Therapy helps you navigate uncertainty without shutting down.
Identity and Self-Worth
Figuring out who you are outside of other people's expectations. A nonjudgmental space to explore your values, build confidence, and stop comparing yourself to everyone else.
ADHD and Executive Function
Time management, focus, emotional regulation, and self-advocacy in the workplace or daily life. Our therapists help young adults with ADHD build executive function skills for real-world independence.
OCD
Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors that interfere with work, relationships, and daily life. Our therapists use ERP (exposure and response prevention), the gold-standard treatment for OCD.
Social Anxiety
Avoiding social situations, dreading work meetings, overthinking conversations, or feeling like everyone is judging you. CBT helps you challenge the thinking patterns that keep you isolated.
Trauma
For young adults who have experienced abuse, violence, assault, loss, or other traumatic events. Our therapists use evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches to help you process your experiences safely.

Therapy for Young Adults FAQs

Is online therapy effective for young adults?

Yes. Research shows virtual therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for anxiety, depression, and other common challenges in young adults.

What ages does Handspring treat?

Handspring provides therapy for young adults ages 18 to 29. We also have a dedicated program for college students ages 18 to 22, teens ages 13 to 17, and children ages 8 to 12, plus parent coaching for caregivers.

How is this different from other online therapy providers?

Most online therapy platforms are general adult marketplaces where therapists are independent contractors. Handspring therapists are employed directly by Handspring, clinically supervised, and specialize in young people. Sessions are structured and evidence-based, not open-ended talk therapy.

How long does therapy take?

Most young adults see meaningful improvement within 8 to 16 weekly sessions. Treatment length depends on what you're working through. Your therapist sets clear goals from the start and tracks progress throughout.

What if I don't connect with my therapist?

We encourage trying at least a month of weekly sessions before making a change, since building trust takes time. If it's not the right fit, let us know and we'll rematch you with another Handspring therapist at no extra cost.

Can I request specific topics or boundaries for sessions?

Yes. During your free consult, you can share any topics or preferences you'd like the therapist to prioritize or avoid. Therapists adjust their approach based on what you need.

Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?

No. You don't need a formal diagnosis to begin therapy at Handspring. Your therapist completes a thorough assessment in the first few sessions and builds a personalized treatment plan. If questions about diagnosis come up, we'll help you navigate that.

What approaches do Handspring therapists use?

Our therapists primarily use CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), the most researched approach for anxiety and depression. But the approach is always tailored to what you're working through. Depending on the challenge, therapists may also use behavioral activation, exposure therapy, ERP for OCD, or other evidence-based methods.

Can I use a parent's insurance?

Yes. If you're under 26 and still on a parent's insurance plan, you're typically covered. Just get a picture of the front and back of the insurance card. We verify your exact cost during the free consult.

Does my therapist need to be in my state?

Your therapist needs to be licensed in the state where you are physically located during your session. If you move to a different state that Handspring covers, we can transition your care. This is standard for all telehealth providers.

Does Handspring offer medication management?

Yes. Medication management is available in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Florida. If you may benefit from a combined therapy and medication approach, your therapist and prescriber coordinate care together.

Who delivers Handspring's young adult therapy?

All Handspring therapy is delivered by licensed therapists with specialized training in child and adolescent mental health. Every clinician is supported by Handspring's clinical supervision team and reviewed regularly for quality of care.
