What is skills-based CBT?

Skills-based CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) focuses on teaching children practical, developmentally appropriate skills to navigate life’s challenges. Whether a child is struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or adjustment issues, skills-based CBT provides concrete tools that can be applied both in therapy and in everyday life. It’s widely regarded as one of the most effective treatments for a range of childhood mental health concerns.

Why does it work?

Skills-based CBT lays the groundwork for healthier thought patterns and behaviors that can last a lifetime. By focusing on practical skill acquisition, children develop greater self-awareness, emotional control, and confidence in facing life’s hurdles.

In that way, skills-based CBT is not just about reducing symptoms in the short term, but also about equipping children with skills that empower them throughout their lives.

Meeting the highest standard of care

Accurate diagnosis

At Handspring, we believe that accurate diagnosis is the cornerstone of meaningful mental health care. Therefore, every child’s care begins with a thorough and thoughtful diagnostic assessment that lets us understand the challenges they’re facing and identify the best path forward. Our clinicians take the time to listen carefully, gather detailed histories, and use evidence-based tools to gain a full picture of each child’s emotional, behavioral, and developmental needs.

This comprehensive approach ensures that we don’t just treat symptoms, but also address root causes. By starting with a precise understanding of a child’s experiences and strengths, we can craft personalized treatment plans that are both targeted and effective. The result is care that feels relevant, responsive, and empowering for children and families alike.

Individualized care

No two children are exactly alike - and neither are their treatment needs. That’s why we take a deeply personalized approach to care. From the very first session, we work closely with families to understand each child’s unique story, strengths, and challenges. Your child’s treatment plan will be highly personalized, with goals, therapeutic methods, and the length of care all thoughtfully tailored to meet your family’s specific needs and circumstances.

Whether your child is dealing with anxiety, mood challenges, attention difficulties, or behavioral concerns, we believe that the most effective treatment is one that fits their developmental stage and cultural background. We collaborate with parents and caregivers every step of the way: you know your child best, and your insight is crucial to successful outcomes.

Committed therapists

At Handspring, we believe that the quality of care starts with the quality of the clinicians delivering it. That’s why our therapists are not freelancers — they’re employees who are deeply invested in our mission and your child’s progress. This model allows us to maintain the highest standards in clinical excellence, collaboration, and continuity of care.

By working with committed therapists, you can trust that your child is receiving consistent, high-quality care from a provider who is connected, supported, and committed to long-term outcomes.

Collaborative approach

We understand that children thrive through the relationships, routines, and environments that support them. That’s why we take a team-based, collaborative approach to care, working closely with key stakeholders in a child’s life when appropriate. We believe that coordination and collaboration with parents, caregivers, pediatricians, educators, or other specialists leads to the best outcomes.
