About
George Humes
I have a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, a MA. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and a MA. in Neuropsychology. I have a combined total of 24+years of clinical experience in both inpatient and outpatient mental health. My theoretical background for counseling is rooted in a Cognitive Behavioral approach which is based on the theoretical assumption that beliefs, behaviors, emotions, and physical reactions are all reciprocally linked (i.e., changes in one area leads to changes in the others). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT emphasizes a collaborative relationship between client and therapist; focus on changing cognitions to produce desirable changes in affect and behavior; a present-centered, time-limited focus; provides a psychoeducational treatment model focusing on specific and structured target problems focus. I am also certified in CBT+, Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT), and Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA). My role as counselor is to help empower the client to reach their potential through self-awareness, acceptance, congruence, and genuineness while assisting them to recognize options, problem-solve effectively, utilize resources, try new ways of doing and/or thinking about things, developing & maintaining healthy relationships, and encouraging them to discover and build on their existing strengths.
