What Is Online Therapy for College Students?

Therapy is a structured conversation with a licensed mental health professional that helps you understand what you're feeling, why you're struggling, and what to do about it. It's not just talking about your problems. Good therapy teaches practical skills you can use every day.

What Therapy Can Help You With

Manage anxiety and stress
Techniques to calm your mind before exams, presentations, or when everything feels like too much.
Work through depression or low motivation
When you can't get out of bed, focus on assignments, or feel like yourself anymore.
Navigate relationships
Romantic relationships, friendships, roommate conflicts, and setting boundaries with people in your life.
Handle homesickness and transitions
Being away from home, adjusting to a new environment, and figuring out who you are outside your family.
Build confidence and self-worth
When imposter syndrome, comparison, or social media makes you question whether you belong.
Develop real coping skills
Tools you practice in sessions and use in your daily life, not just advice you forget by tomorrow.

Evidence-based, not one-size-fits-all

Our therapists primarily use CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) but always tailor the approach to what you're working through. Sessions are structured, goal-oriented, and focused on building skills that stick.

Designed for college-age students

Your therapist understands the specific pressures of college: academic overload, social dynamics, identity questions, and the weight of figuring out your future. This isn't adult therapy repackaged for younger people.

100% virtual, fits your schedule

Sessions happen over secure video from your dorm, apartment, car, or any private space. Evening and flexible scheduling available. No commute, no waiting room.

How Therapy for College Students Works

1

Free Consult

Start with a free 30-minute call. You can book and attend this on your own (no parent needed). Share what's going on, ask questions, and learn how Handspring works. We verify your insurance during this call.

2

Therapist Matching

We match you with a licensed therapist based on your specific concerns, personality, and goals. No waitlist. Most students are in their first session within a week.

3

Weekly Virtual Sessions

Meet with your therapist weekly via secure video, typically 45 to 60 minutes. Your therapist will start with an assessment to understand what's going on, then build a personalized plan with clear goals. From there, sessions are structured and skills-based. Evenings and flexible scheduling available around your class schedule.

What Our Therapists Help College Students With

Anxiety
The most common reason college students come to Handspring. We treat generalized anxiety, social anxiety, test anxiety, performance anxiety, and panic using evidence-based approaches including CBT.
Depression and Low Motivation
Persistent sadness, trouble getting out of bed, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or feeling disconnected. CBT and behavioral activation help you rebuild momentum and reconnect with what matters.
Academic Stress and Burnout
Overwhelmed by coursework, perfectionism, procrastination, or the pressure to have your future figured out. Therapy helps you manage stress and build sustainable habits without sacrificing your wellbeing.
Homesickness and Adjustment
Being away from home, adjusting to a new environment, missing your family or friends. Therapy helps you process the transition and build confidence in your independence.
Relationships and Social Challenges
Romantic relationships, friendships, roommate conflicts, loneliness, and navigating social dynamics on campus. Therapy helps you understand your patterns, set boundaries, and communicate effectively.
Identity and Self-Worth
Figuring out who you are, what you want, and how to feel confident in your own decisions. A nonjudgmental space to explore identity, values, and self-worth away from the pressure of comparison.
ADHD and Executive Function
Time management, focus, emotional regulation, and self-advocacy in a college environment. Our therapists help students with ADHD build executive function skills for academic and personal success.
OCD
Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors that interfere with classes, relationships, and daily life. Our therapists use ERP (exposure and response prevention), the gold-standard treatment for OCD.
Life Transitions
Starting college, transferring schools, studying abroad, preparing for graduation, or grieving a loss. Therapy helps you navigate major changes without letting uncertainty take over.
Trauma
For students who have experienced abuse, violence, assault, or other traumatic events. Our therapists use evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches to help you process your experiences safely.

Therapy for College Students FAQs

Is online therapy effective for college students?

Yes. Research shows virtual therapy is as effective as in-person therapy for anxiety, depression, and other common challenges in college students.

Can I book therapy without my parents knowing?

Yes. Anyone 18 and over can book their own consult, attend sessions independently, and manage their own care. Sessions are confidential. You can use your parent's insurance without them seeing session details (though they may see that a claim was made to Handspring Health on an Explanation of Benefits statement).

How is this different from my campus counseling center?

Campus counseling is a great resource, but most centers have 4-8 week waitlists, limit students to 6-12 sessions per year, and close during breaks. Handspring has no waitlist, no session cap, and is available year-round, including over summer and holidays. Your therapist stays the same the entire time.

Can I do sessions from my dorm?

Yes. All you need is a private space and a device with a camera. Many students do sessions from their dorm room, car, library study room, or any quiet spot. Evening and flexible scheduling is available around your class schedule.

What ages does Handspring treat?

Handspring provides therapy for college students ages 18 to 22. We also have a dedicated program for young adults ages 23 to 29, teens ages 13 to 17, and children ages 8 to 12, plus parent coaching for caregivers.

How long does therapy take?

Most students see meaningful improvement within 8 to 16 weekly sessions. Treatment length depends on what you're working through. Your therapist sets clear goals from the start and tracks progress throughout.

What if I don't connect with my therapist?

We encourage trying at least a month of weekly sessions before making a change, since building trust takes time. If it's not the right fit, let us know and we'll rematch you with another Handspring therapist at no extra cost.

Can I request specific topics or boundaries for sessions?

Yes. During your free consult, you can share any topics or preferences you'd like the therapist to prioritize or avoid. Therapists adjust their approach based on what you need.

Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?

No. You don't need a formal diagnosis to begin therapy at Handspring. Your therapist completes a thorough assessment in the first few sessions and builds a personalized treatment plan. If questions about diagnosis come up, we'll help you navigate that.

What approaches do Handspring therapists use?

Our therapists primarily use CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), the most researched approach for anxiety and depression. But the approach is always tailored to what you're working through. Depending on the challenge, therapists may also use behavioral activation, exposure therapy, ERP for OCD, or other evidence-based methods.

What happens over summer break or if I transfer schools?

Your therapy continues. Because Handspring is virtual and licensed in 9 states, you can keep seeing the same therapist as long as you're physically located in one of our covered states. If you go home for the summer to a state we cover, your care continues without interruption.

Does my therapist need to be in my state?

Your therapist needs to be licensed in the state where you are physically located during your session. So if you attend school in New York, your therapist will be licensed in New York. If you go home to New Jersey for break, we can continue care as long as your therapist is also licensed there (or transition you to one who is). This is standard for all telehealth providers.

Can I use my parent's insurance?

Yes. If you're under 26 and on a parent's insurance plan, you're typically covered. Just ask your parent which insurance provider they have and get a picture of the front and back of the card. We verify your exact cost during the free consult before you commit to anything.

What does the first session look like?

The first session is an assessment. Your therapist gets to know you, asks about what's going on, and starts building a picture of what you're dealing with. It's low-pressure and conversational. You won't be asked to dive into the hardest stuff right away. By the end, you'll have a sense of your therapist's style and a rough plan for what you'll work on together.

How do I talk to my parents about starting therapy?

You don't have to share everything. A simple approach: "I've been feeling stressed/anxious/overwhelmed and I found an online therapy service that takes our insurance. I just need a picture of the insurance card to get started." Most parents want to help. If you're over 18, the decision is yours. Handspring can verify insurance and share the cost before you commit, so you'll have concrete information to share.

Does Handspring offer medication management?

Yes. Medication management is available in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Florida. If you may benefit from a combined therapy and medication approach, your therapist and prescriber coordinate care together.

Who delivers Handspring's college student therapy?

All Handspring therapy is delivered by licensed therapists with specialized training in child and adolescent mental health. Every clinician is supported by Handspring's clinical supervision team and reviewed regularly for quality of care.
